Honoring Juneteenth: A Time to Reflect, Celebrate, and Grow Together
Greetings ASGW Members,
As we gather in spirit and purpose during this significant time, we pause to honor Juneteenth. This day, a pivotal moment in American history, holds profound significance and continues to resonate deeply within our communities.
On June 19, 1865, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom. This day—now recognized as a federal holiday—symbolizes liberation, resilience, and the long, continuing journey toward equity and justice in our nation. Juneteenth is a commemoration of freedom and a call to action. It reminds us that justice delayed is justice denied, and it challenges each of us to reflect on our roles as professionals, educators, counselors, and community leaders. Within the ASGW community, we are steadfast in our commitment to honor this legacy by actively promoting inclusivity, fostering healing, and creating brave spaces for dialogue and transformation through group work.
Let us use this day not only to remember the struggles of the past but to celebrate the African American community's strength, creativity, and cultural richness. Let it inspire us to commit even more deeply to dismantling systemic barriers and affirming the dignity of every individual.
In the spirit of Juneteenth, we urge all members to actively engage in conversations that uplift, support initiatives that bring about equity, and walk alongside historically marginalized voices. Through our collective efforts, we can move forward together toward a more just and compassionate future.
With love, respect, and hope,
ASGW Leadership Team (2024-2025)
